Why A VA?

My Past

My career in senior management in the good old fashioned corporate world is something I reflect on and just think ‘Oh my!’. I had an amazing 15 years climbing the corporate ladder after finishing university. How did I justify to myself and my family spending over 15 hours a day in the office and then taking work home with me as ‘normal’? Well I guess it was normal for me at that time and I just got on with it to get the job done. Why didn’t I question the craziness of the situation? But like most people, having bills to pay and a certain lifestyle had to be paid for.

Since having my boys I question everything much more. My time is very precious and I am making sure that whatever I do now has a purpose and results in something!! (Sometimes finishing a warm cup of coffee is a win.)

Being a VA

Last year I was researching possible jobs that I could do ‘from home’ as I didn’t want to leave my boys. I stumbled across Jo Munro and the VA Handbook site and I have never looked back. I am loving being a Virtual Assistant (VA). Honestly 3 years ago I didn’t even know what a VA was!

Being a VA is great – I am the boss, I make all the decisions, I work with people I want to work with and I can do it all around my boys swimming lessons, football practice and bedtime stories. The only drawback is that the financial uncertainty is there, but that’s the highs and lows of freelancing. I have been fortunate enough to get a few clients quickly after starting up and I have just been building on this portfolio ever since. I am now a confident VA who delivers to my various clients and it makes me happy.

Don’t get me wrong the hours are long – I am most productive after my boys have gone to sleep and I can get 3-4 hours uninterrupted work is done in an evening.

So I am not saying I am working any less now than before, but I am choosing when and who I work with and that’s the real difference.
