When I was working in the corporate world, the lifecycle of annual performance appraisals and feedback sessions was drilled into all Managers – there were deadlines for everything to be done by and boy was it stressful to book those sessions in with everyone (and don’t even get me started on trying to find a meeting room).
When I was doing my coaching qualification, it became apparent to me that people actually liked having 1-2-1 sessions. If they were based on a good working relationship and you, as the manager were helping the individual to be a better person at work (which also made a difference to their home life).
Now as a business owner I have a great network of similar minded individuals who push me to get to the next level – having 1-2-1 meetings is mostly done in coffee shops (now using the reusable cups). But it is my time and I make sure it is spent doing something for me and my business.
This week I managed to get feedback from someone that had a major impact on my life. Totally out of the blue, in connection to a local networking event he described me as “the one and only – legend is an understatement”. Well that made me feel awesome!
Anthony Punshon owns a successful and growing fitness company in Worthing, and I was a very regular member of his 5.30am class prior to having my boys. To be honest with you, I did so flipping well that I am on the window! I have promised Anthony and most importantly to myself, that I will return, and I will smash those bootcamp sessions again.
So, the point of my post is that when you are working in small businesses or alone – getting feedback really is important.
Make sure you have a great network of like-minded driven people around you, who will push you on when it gets tough and be there when you fall – so you always get back up and try again.
