Why Do You Always Want To Please Everyone?
I used to shudder and dislike the annual appraisals at work, having to always prove myself and doing crazy hours and meeting even crazier deadlines, just to be told sometimes that “by supporting others” it was not considered an appropriate senior management quality and I need to play the office politics better.
I always knew that with hard work and building the right network I would make a difference in my working life and as good fortune would have it after having my family I am now a proud business owner (and heck I get to make all the decisions and display the qualities I want to!)
My working style has always been collaborative and friendly, even when I used to work in a bakery during my university days. I like to get the best out of people and see them grow. I think that’s why I mostly enjoyed working in support roles all my working life.
Can You Be Too Nice?
I once got told that I was too nice to others. To me, being nice and polite is what comes naturally (thank parents for raising a good daughter later) and I get a buzz when things work well and people are happy. Why would you not want to see your co-workers enjoy work and like coming to work each day?
At the time I just used to shrug it off and just dash to another meeting. What I now realise is that it was not important to me what others thought as I knew I was doing the right thing by my team members. I trust myself to know when to walk away and when to stay in the game.
I Have Found My Calling
Becoming a VA has been my game changer! I work with CEOs, consultants, coaches and small business start-ups that want to make a difference. No one day is the same and I am loving it!
The great thing is that I know I am making a difference to my clients and their businesses while being true to my own values and not having to play the office politics.
(Instead I have the time to play with my kids and I am proud to be teaching them to be nice to others.)
