Strategy planning: why you need this in your business

Strategy planning

‘’A goal without a plan is just a wish’’

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

I love this quote. It so simply explains the change in perspective that takes place when you move your mindset from thinking to doing. It can be applied to something as simple as popping to the shops for a pint of milk, or as in many of my client’s cases, huge, potentially life-changing ambitions to build businesses that makes a real difference to others.

But as the quote says, a goal without a plan is just a wish, so my job is to help business owners turn their wishes in to goals, and their goals into reality. The truth is though that without proper strategy planning, this can quickly become a very messy process.

The first and biggest roadblock might be simply not knowing where to start. You have all the ideas, the vision and the energy to put into this thing but none of the tools to actually get it moving. Staff, processes, the operational aspects, marketing strategy, launch (The list goes on).

Que the disabling mind-spaghetti, and then progress. Just. Stops…. or you go round in circles, eating up valuable time and money.

Does this sound familiar?

I’ve met numerous entrepreneurs that have had this problem and they tell me it’s one of the number one frustration they face.

It’s time to clear the mind-spaghetti and give yourself a clear view of the steps needed to turn the business idea into a reality.

You need to laser-focus your energy

Of course, strategy planning in business means so much more than simply having goals that you’re working towards. It’s about having a strategic map to follow with your priorities listed in order, so you know where your time, money and energy must go every day. This is the game-changer and the switch from thinking to doing that will set you off on the journey to success.

Here are my top tips if you’re tackling this yourself:

  1. Set aside a day where you can laser-focus your ideas. Making the biggest difference in a short space of time is a cost-effective way to get clear on your plans, creating less disruption within your team and it protects your profit margin.
  2. Break down each goal with a set of actionable tasks and sub-tasks and list the resources you’ll need for each part and who will be responsible.
  3. Set measurable KPI’s so you can track your progress.
  4. Give yourself a deadline and plan time into your schedule to invest each day/week to reach that deadline.
  5. Ask someone to be your accountability partner. You’ll feel more motivated on the steps ahead it’ll keep you focused if you get side-lined.

Of course, if tackling this on your own makes you feel lost or scared (it’s a big deal!), that’s ok. Help is at hand.
