STRATEGY SESSIONS – WHY THEY ARE GOOD FOR YOUR BUSINESS

As a business owner, it’s easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day running of your company. You might not have time to step back and assess the big picture, or you might be too close to things to see where improvements can be made. This is where a strategy session (or sessions) comes in. In this short article I go into some detail about the important difference between a consultant and a coach, how strategy sessions commonly work, and what you can expect to gain from your investment.

What is a strategy session?

A strategy session is a one-time meeting or series of meetings with a specialist consultant to review your business performance, systems, processes and team structure. The focus is on finding ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness and, specifically in my area of expertise as an operations consultant, help you navigate your next Operational Tipping Point®.

3 key ways a strategy session can help:

  1. A strategy session can help you identify specific areas of your business that need attention. You might not be fully aware of how all the moving parts work together, so it is helpful to have someone else take a look and make recommendations from an outside perspective.
  2. If you’re planning to build a plan for moving your business forward, a consultant will help you identify areas where improvements can be made. They work with you to develop a strategy for implementing the required changes and help you create a roadmap for success.
  3. Strategy sessions can help jump-start a business when it needs a boost. If you’re feeling stuck, a fresh perspective can be helpful. The consultant can also offer new ideas and approaches that you might not have considered.

What is the difference between a consultant and a coach?

I’m asked a lot whether my services as a consultant are the same as that of a coach. The short answer is no and there are some important distinctions between the two roles that are helpful to note. A coach focuses on helping individuals to reach their potential. A coach may work with clients on issues such as defining their goals, time management, and stress reduction. In contrast, a consultant will focus on helping business owners to achieve their goals. They provide advice and guidance based on their experience and expertise and help their clients to reach those successful outcomes. While there are some similarities between the two, it is important to understand the differences so that you can choose the right professional for your needs.

What is it like working with a consultant?

I’d love this opportunity to give you an insight into my work as an operations consultant and the ways I have helped my clients work through their Operational Tipping Point® journeys.

For me it’s about a no-nonsense approach to business. I don’t talk theory and make things fluffy. I believe in hard work and getting things done and that’s why my clients hire me – they know I get them the results they need. I’ve built my career on a foundation of hard work, determination and a commitment to excellence and that’s what I bring to every project I work on. If your current consultant isn’t doing this, I’d be asking some questions!

I am the objective person to guide you when your emotions take over

It can be difficult to think clearly and make rational decisions when you are so emotionally connected to something. In these situations, you may need someone who can remain calm and objective to help you see things more clearly. My approach is to offer a level-headed and composed response in the face of these strong emotions. By helping you to examine your situation logically we can help you make the best decisions for you and your business.

In summary

Strategy sessions provide an opportunity to step back and take a look at the big picture, assess your current situation and come up with a plan of action to help you achieve your business goals.
