I like helping people and most of my family do expect me to organise many things – I do get a great sense of achievement out of it.
But over the last 12 months I have actually started saying “no”.
What I mean is that I now understand that my time is important too and I show myself the respect that I expect of others.
By saying no sometimes, people have started to appreciate my time more and ask in a more positive way if they really need something.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t just blurt out ’no’ to everyone. There are various ways of getting your point across. But I do think it important we give ourselves the permission to do what is important to us. For me it is the balance of work and family life – that is why I set up Latchgate in the first place.
People in the Service industry like Virtual Assistants are known for going out of their way to pleasing their clients – bit too much sometimes, because we can see where we can help given the nature of our strengths in organisation, process and time management.
Virtual Assistants are there to help busy people sort their businesses out and help them be more effective as leaders, managers and business owners.
We are guilty of not valuing ourselves highly enough to keep saying yes to everyone.
My resolution for 2019 is to work with the people I really want to work with, who also appreciate my time and have the respect for what I do.
There are great clients that I work with and as a business owner I know I can choose who I work with – isn’t that such a satisfying thought?!
